Some of the downsides of a fine hair type is the flatness and lack of volume that can leave your locks looking limp and some hairstyles, such as an updo, without the wow factor. These hair problems can be solved, however, with the right haircut and some simple hair tips.

Haircut Suggestions:

Graduated Haircuts

A graduated haircut where the hair is cut progressively shorter towards the back of the head is great for adding movement and volume to fine hair types and will work well on straight or curly hair elasticities.

This full-bodied look is especially good for fine hair that needs more fullness and volume. The back section has been graduated to create shape and to contour the head, while the side sections have been given angled layers and a wispy texture.

Layered Haircuts

Layered haircuts add body to fine hair and can add shape and style if your hair length is long, or versatility if your haircut is a short crop.

Textured ends and layers make a big impact on this divine medium straight hairstyle. The back has been jagged cut at the nape and then blended up to the funky layers through the crown. These layers create lift and body for the hair and the layering is also carried through the sides to create shape around the face.

Fine Hair Tips:

  • A short or medium hair length is ideal for fine hair types as any hair length longer than the shoulders can make the hair look quite thin.
  • Layers work really well in fine hair and over all layers will boost fullness to your locks.
  • Bangs can help to strengthen the look of your hair, especially around the sides of your face. For ideas about bangs, see our hairstyles article, Hair Ideas: Bangs Hairstyles and their Benefits.
  • If you’ve always wanted to try shorter hair then give it a go. The shorter your hair, the more volume it’ll look like it has, which is a big boost for fine hair.
  • Blunt cut hairstyles will instantly thicken fine hair.
  • Velcro rollers are a great hair shaping tool for fine hair as they don't need to be clipped into place and are less likely to cause damage to thin, fragile locks.
  • A diagonal hair part that starts on one side of the forehead and moves diagonally towards the center of the head will make fine hair look even on both sides of the part and create a thicker look than a traditional straight side part.

We hope these haircut suggestions and hair tips help you to make the most of your fine hair. If you have any of your own fine hair tips then be sure to share them by leaving a comment below.

There are lots of ways to give your hair a makeover. Big hairdo changes like a new hair color or a shorter hair length will create an instant new look with lots of impact, or styling your hair into a half up, half down updo or a braided hairstyle will give you an entirely new look without having to alter your hair in anyway.

But if you’re looking for more than just a new hairstyle or something less drastic than a hair cut or hair color that changes your hair completely then bangs might be the answer.

If you don't know much about bangs then our hairstyle article, Hair Ideas: Bangs Hairstyles and their Benefits, is a good place to start. For those who do know about bangs but just aren't sure if they are for them then take a look at these two hairstyles from Carrie Underwood.

Carrie Underwood hairstylesCarrie Underwood hairstyles

For both of these hairstyles, all Carrie has done is added loose waves to her long blonde locks - and while both hairdos look great - there’s no denying that the hairstyle that also features bangs has that extra oomph.

This is because the bangs have not only added a new feel to Carrie’s classic wavy hairstyle, they have also shortened the length of her oblong face shape as well as added balance by flattering the width across her forehead. She's then further enhanced her face shape by side-sweeping her bangs to draw attention up and away from her pointed chin and focus it on her beautiful eyes. That is the beauty and impact of bangs. They create a new look, help minimize facial flaws and can enhance great features such as your eyes and cheekbones!

So the next time you’re in the mood for a hair style makeover but unsure about what to try then why not give bangs a go?. If you're still not convinced then upload your photo to our Virtual Hairstyler and try something with bangs from our range of celebrity and salon hairstyles. That way you'll get a firsthand look at whether bangs are the hair style makeover for you.

Debra Messing hairstyles

Coloring your hair can be disappointing when your fab new shade fades too quick, so if you want your new hair color to stay nice and fresh—as fresh as Debra Messing's lovely red hair color (right)—then check out this expert advice.

  • If you have healthy hair then your color will last longer. Importantly, then, you need to make sure your hair has the correct moisture and protein levels.
  • A hair color that's within two or three shades of your natural hair color will last longer because the fading won't be as noticeable.
  • One of the first signs that your hair color is old and tired is when your roots are really obvious. Semi-permanent hair coloring can help you avoid this problem as it fades off more gently.
  • If you choose a permanent color then a tinted hair glaze added over the top can help seal in your new hair color.
  • If you're booked in for a hair coloring service then skip any other additional chemical treatments as things like perms can make your hair dryer and, in turn, increase the speed at which your color fades.
  • For hair color solutions that are a little more fade-friendly try highlights or an underlay: highlights are done with bleach so they don't fade; and since the color of an underlay is quite subtle (its only visible through your top strands) it's not the end of the world if it fades a little.
  • Shampooing your hair more than every other day will increase your hair color's fading. We recommend a pigmented shampoo also to help slow fading down.
  • The sun does a great job fading your hair, so rather than cover your new hair color with a hat, grab some styling products with UV protectors.

Hair scrunching is the perfect styling option for those with naturally curly hair, because not only does it bring out and enhance curls, but it also creates contrast, gives your hair texture and adds volume to your hair (which is also great for fine hair types).

Even if you only have a slight wave, hair scrunching can give you a whole new look and all it takes is a few minutes.

Nothing feels better than stepping out your front door with thick, healthy, high volume hair. It's true what they say: if your hair's flat, limp and lifeless then you tend to feel the same way too. So inject some volume into your tresses and get used to feeling great! The simple tips below will help you get beautiful and sexy hair that's chock full of volume— in minutes!

High volume hair

  • Get some hair coloring done: full head permanent hair color makes the hair look thicker and healthier; highlights and lowlights add the appearance of depth (and thickness) to your hair.
  • Get a hair cut: chin to shoulder length hair has more body, so to maximize your hair's volume speak to your hairdresser about cutting it to this length.
  • Use the right shampoo for your hair type: if you don't your hair can be weighed down and will look limp and lifeless.
  • Don't over-condition: over-conditioning fine hair will make it look flat, so only condition your ends on a daily basis.
  • Try a cold rinse: finish washing your hair with a cold rinse as this will enhance your hair's body and shine and make your it appear thicker and full of volume.
  • Style with volume-boosting hair products: if you have fine hair then mousse is best; get yourself a good root-booster hair product too.
  • Blow-dry your way to body and volume: blow-dry a small section at a time working from the bottom up, aiming at the roots and finishing each section with a blast of cool air; finish by spritzing hairspray on the roots.
